I have a couple followup questions.if you don't mind. What the option does is to remove all library items that are marked as unavailable.Īnd that is a destructive feature in which you won't be able to get that metadata item back as soon as it is removed, only through a database restore from a backup.ĭepending on the setup it can be beneficial to have that option disabled especially when you have your files on something other than the same device and don't have redundancy.īut, this would also mean that Plex won't clean itself up and when you delete or upgrade or just rename some files, Plex would not remove the old files from your library, you would have to delete them manually in Plex too. If the files are being or seem to be removed the Plex would detect that change and scan the library again and mark every library item as unavailable if the associated files are not accessible anymore. Almost everything in Plex is tied mainly to the metadata and the actual files are associated with that metadata item. That option is to let Plex know to clean up after itself. To question 3: this is not what you think it is. So an easy way to restore your changed you made. You can store images next to the video file by naming it poster.ext or background.ext which Plex would use automatically when you have the "prefer local assets" active in your library settings.įor everything else for better restoration I would recommend looking into Plex meta manager, a 3rd party app that can change your metadata in Plex based on configuration files that can be used on any server and any library with minimal changes. You would also use that to move the server to a new system to completely restore it. This would be restored when you do a backup as I described above because the Plex data directory is basically your server and everything on it (except the files in your libraries). So if you download the database and restore it, server settings as well as images won't be restored. Image metadata is stored locally in the Plex data directory.

What the download database will do is, well, only downloading the database which only stores your library and metadata storage location and some metadata. I do that through a plugin on my unraid server daily. To question 1: In Plex itself? Yes those are your options but you can always stop Plex and zip up the Plex data directory to make a backup of it.
